What is the Starfish Pool Appeal?
The Starfish Pool Appeal has been established by a team of enthusiastic and committed volunteers. The Appeal aims to raise money to build and maintain a hydrotherapy swimming pool. The pool will be sited at Claremont Secondary School in Redland, Bristol. Many of the children at Claremont School have complex physical and learning disabilities. The pool will be available to the older children and young adults at the school and also other children and young adults with disabilities in the Bristol area.
"Hydrotherapy is the only time that my son can move freely. It's great exercise and such fun; he positively beams with pleasure."- Parent of child with severe cerebral palsy.
What is Hydrotherapy?
The warm water, high air temperature and relief of bodyweight provided by a hydrotherapy pool enable people to move in ways that they cannot manage on land. For many disabled people, who may live with pain all the time, their first session in a hydrotherapy pool can be their first time without pain. Additionally the exercises are more intensive than land based physiotherapy and new movements are learned which can be transferred to everyday life.
